The West Newton Bridge is limited to one lane vehicular traffic.

Those who typically approach West Newton via Route 31 can find a detour map with directions at www.dwni.org.   (updated: 7-19-10)

Trail Construction Status

Allegheny County, PA

Trail is complete from Cumberland, MD to Duquesne, PA, a distance of 135 miles.  The trail ends at Grant Avenue in Duquesne.  We do not recommend riding Route 837 from Grant Avenue to the Hot Metal Bridge: this well-traveled highway has poor sight lines in many areas and non-existent shoulders.  Pittsburgh's "Rack and Roll" buses which can transport two bicycles per bus are accessible in McKeesport, the 56 McKeesport-Lincoln Place. Eliza Furnace Detour
As part of the Bates Street/Second Avenue Improvements Project, the Eliza Furnace Trail will be detoured to allow the contractor to replace the existing trail bridge.  It is anticipated that the detour will be implemented the middle of next week, August 25, 2010.  As seen on the detour map posted, the route will go from a temporary access ramp at Middle Access Drive Interchange with Second Avenue, then along Technology Drive to the Bates Street Interchange with Second Avenue, and then follow Second Avenue to the Hot Metal Bridge Access Ramp.  It is anticipated that this detour will be in affect till the summer of 2011. Click Here for more information on this detour.

PA American Water
A temporary Trail closure will soon begin along a portion of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail as part of the Pennsylvania American Water's Becks Run Pumping Station Replacement Project. The Trail closure will be in place starting June 21, 2010 through early spring 2011. The 1.5-mile portion of the Trail being affected runs roughly from Water Street at the Steelers practice facility to the dead end of the Trail adjacent to the Glenwood Bridge. Signs will soon alert Trail users to the closure and note that the Trail will be open and usable every weekend during the project from Friday at 4:30 through Sunday evenings. Point State Park
Restoration of Point State Park is still going on. Trail users will be happy to know the connection across the Allegheny River along the Fort Duquesne Bridge is now open. Biking is permissible around the lower riverfront promenade. Caution is advised as the flagstones have not yet been replaced.

Southside Trail
The long-term plan for the Southside Trail is to connect to the existing trail at the Waterfront in Homestead/West Homestead. At this point there are not construction plans because we need to work out agreements with private property owners. South Side 10-1 trail segment of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail is now complete. Trail users are finally able to travel from the Baldwin Borough Trail through the South Side and to Station Square, downtown Pittsburgh and beyond. Work continues on the acquisition of trail corridor on the Steel Valley Trail section.

There is no parking at the Baldwin side.

 

Montour Trail
The trail is completely open from MP 0 to MP 22. At MP 22 where the trail crosses PA route 50 a temporary bridge over the stream and crosswalk is complete which eliminates the former 0.5 mile road detour along busy

Rt. 50.

Trail is complete from Route 50 (MP22) to Morganza Road (MP27). Morganza road must be crossed at grade as well as Georgetown Road. (0.3 miles farther) Design is underway for these bridges and construction may occur in 2010. There is a 200 yard detour along Valleybrook Road, West of Route 19.

From Route 19 to the Library Trestle the trail is complete. There are two detours in South Park along Rte 88 and Brownsville-Library Road, and along Piney Fork Road. Design work is underway to reduce the length and difficulty of these detours. The trail is on road from Gill Hall Rd to Rte 51 at Large. The trail is complete from there to the terminus in Clairton.  (updated 11-5-09)

 

Ohiopyle State Park
A paving project will be taking place on the Great Allegheny Passage between miles 87 and 88 near the intersection with Third Street in Connellsville. Mobilization will occur on September 13.  Long delays and/or day long closures may occur on weekdays over a period of 4-10 days.

Jonathan Run Culvert will be repaired (trail mile marker 75 between Ohiopyle and Connellsville). Contractor mobilization will begin on May 17, 2010 and the project will take the majority of the summer.  Periodic temporary closures of a few minutes will occur.  Notification of longer closures will be made if and when needed. Bicyclists should expect vehicles on the trail between Bruner Run Access and Jonathan Run and should walk their bicycles through the construction zone.

Continued resurfacing in spring, summer, and fall.  Trail will be open during resurfacing but bicyclist should exercise caution while passing construction site.  Heavy equipment will be traveling on the trail during work for stone delivery to work sites and construction postings will be in place notifying trail users when work is in progress.

Somerset County, PA

The 3,300 ft. long Big Savage Tunnel, near the Mason-Dixon Line is lighted.  The tunnel will be closed for the winter.  BST was opened on March 24, 2010.   Please check this site for updates.

The Big Savage Tunnel Recognition Plaque is in the final phase of review.  When complete, it will be erected at the Deal Trailhead.  The unveiling date will be provided as soon as it becomes available.   This is a big undertaking, thanks for your patience!

 

Pinkerton Tunnel

The Pinkerton Tunnel, near Markleton, remains closed with detour on abandoned rail line following the river.

This is a permanent detour, there are no plans to reconstruct this tunnel.

 

Bollman Bridge

The Bollman Bridge is in open for use!
